チーム目高 - Team Medaka

Supposed to run a 2km relay race this morning with Team-Medaka, the do-hayai-hakujin. (l-r Moi, Doug, Andrea and Andy)Oh no! It rained ferociously and it was cancelled. Plus me and Andrea got on the wrong train anyway... so back to mine for pancakes. Shame, we even made our own shirts!

Yesterday was gorgeous though, went for a quick poot on the velo, and walked bare-foot on the sand.

ソ運dsおf手ぇ四ty - sounds of the city

The local train to Tokyo sounds EXACTLY like the intro whine of Killer Queen every time it pulls into a station.
The Phillip Glass music from Koyannisqatsi is either sampled or used by the Tokyo subway system; manic electronic keyboards telling you to get a wriggle on.
They also play bird calls throughout the underground; suppose the users aren't chirpy enough by themselves.
Starbucks plays jazz-lite versions of Marvin Gaye.
In Yoyogi park there are various live bands complete with drum kits and sound-systems; they play next to the sign prohibiting unsocial noise-making. Drummers play in a big group in the middle. Guys and gals in hip-hop attire play badminton. Students play frisbee. A large group practice an elaborate sword-fighting sequence; looks like they're a theatre group training for a Kurosawa epic. Violinist, accordionist and guitarist play wandering across the grass. Close behind solitary singers/poets/story-tellers preach to no-one.

This week I got a late Valentines card with the message "I'm always thinking of you" signed in undecipherable Japanese left on my desk. Before I got the chance to embarrass myself by asking what it said, one of the lady-teachers came to explain it was from all of them.
Also this week, one of my male students leaned out the window as I left school and yelled "See you darling."

Bob Sapp VS Doraemon

When I tried to sugggest that this fellow, Bob Sapp (a K-1 fighter... it's big in Japan) would beat the small blue fellow with the red nose, Doraemon (Japanese Mickey Mouse sort of), in a stronger-weaker game in class, I was met with derision by the losing side. One girl recoiled in horror saying, "C'mon, recently he's been going downhill!" (or some such thing in Japanese).
Went to Tokyo at the weekend and stayed in a capsule hotel. Good job I'm not two inches longer.

The busiest crossing in the world. It's busy.

A samurai in the morning, walking his dog... ahhhhh.

Was a little surprised to find this, seemed out of place somehow.

NO FISHING!

On the road again...

First proper ride since my 12 punctures. Six hours in the saddle.

This last road was incredible; forest on both sides winding slowly up and then quickly down some big hills. On the way up a car couldn't get past me so I pulled over to let it pass. 20 minutes later I caught up with it on the other side and he pulled over to let ME past! I was giving it some on the downhill - sweet like a nut.
On the way back I decided to meet up with my friends in an onsen (public baths) so headed a different way home. Was about 4 km away when I rode through a set of lights and felt my back tire go, huge slash in the tire - nuts. Got them to come and pick me up. But left my bike lock with my keys in it outside the convenience store... only realised when we arrived home. Cue an hour drive back to find it. Luckily someone had handed it in and they just grinned when I walked in.
Next day I headed to an ikebana (flower arranging) exhibition.

This was my favourite, they had a childrens' section and after the overblown it was simply delightful.

Guess I'm back on the whale tomorrow... the bike shop was closed.

sublime -- maple syrup -- subliminal

After the longest week in some time, working everyday until at least 7, I needed to get out of Hama. To Nagoya I went, to see the Ansel Adams exhibition. AWESOME. Then headed to the Tokugawa Art Museum; famous for the Genji scrolls, which weren't on display for conservation reasons... Bought some John Coltrane and Ornette Coleman.
Got funky with ma'self on train 'ome to the sounds of the Chillis.
Sunday: pancakes with Michelle and Doug, got conscripted for a 2km run... not sure about that.
