Uniqlo heat tech long johns

I would like to heartily second my friends appreciation for these simply wonderful winter wonders.
And also thank the fact that so far this year - I have not needed them!

My whole wardrobe has slowly been changing since I've been off the bike... I no longer have the tell-tale oil stain half way down the right calf of all my trousers. I had to buy a winter coat that did the job of keeping my body warm that cycling usually allowed it to do all by itself.
Scarves, boots, gloves - all no longer needed to be cycling specific. My apparel sits slowly being buried beneath everything else in my wardrobe. All my jerseys lie unworn and unused, the crash damage and general wear and tear no further worn and no further torn. I no longer measure distances in minutes but in bus and tube changes.

My yellow racer has been unridden for well over a year now. The tyres flat. The whole thing abandoned at my Mum's. When I go home I look at the familiar scratches and finger the gear shifters. Mountain roads pass through my mind from time to time. The open green hills and fields of Japan.

I recently came across a photo one of the guys in the cycle club had had printed for me. It had been for a local newspaper - immortalising - or at least providing rabbit hutch lining - reporting the Survival Cycle. We were lined up outside Ichiya's front window all taking off together in the evening light. Everyone wearing the orange and blue of the Ichiya jersey.

It seems far away and long ago. And I miss it.
